The history and origin of the pug dog is shrouded in mystery
as some believe the pug was bred at a certain time, such as the
Shang dynasty in China, as others believe that it cannot be known
exactly when the pug came into existence. Others believe that
this dog came into existence and was bred by the Tibetan monks.
What is known, however, is the path the pug took to get from China
to Europe and to eventually the United States. It is a path that

The pug dog became the main breed for the House of Orange when
one saved the life of William, the Prince of Orange, by warning
him of the approaching Spanish soldiers in 1572. Later, after
William II was crowned the King of England, he was accompanied
by many pugs and this breed of dog became the most popular dog
to own for many generations in Europe. Also, in the mid 1800’s,
the pug was brought back to England by their soldiers and were
then used as showcase dogs. In 1885, the American Kennel Club
recognized this breed of dog as well.
The history and origin of the pug dog in France began when Napoleon
Bonaparte’s wife, Josephine, had her pug carry hidden messages
to her husband while she was imprisoned at Les Carmes. It is now
evident that throughout history the pug has been a loyal companion
of people, including some that were famous. At one point, this
dog was a sign of royalty, which of course made no difference
to the dog. It will always be loyal to its master, and the main
purpose of any pug dog is to please its owner and show him/her
its undying affection. This unique companionship the pug feels
for its owners can be traced back to how the royal courts kept
pugs close to their sides at all times. The dog evolved into a
“clingy” type of dog that wants nothing more in life than to please
the people around it.
The pug has been described as (and some believe the name of the
dog comes from this) “multum in parvo” which means “a lot in a
small space.” There have been many times in history when the pug
dog has been asked to perform feats beyond what was thought to
be enough for its small frame. That did not appear to matter to
the dog, for it rose to the occasion and ended up on the laps
of some of the most famous people in European, Chinese, and Japanese
history. The strong love that this dog shows for everyone around
it is also a possible reason for the explanation of its name.
Either way one wants to look at it, it is clear that the origin
and history of the pug has been that of a loyal and peaceful companion.
This is due to the dog’s temperament; the pug is a very calm dog
and while health concerns may steer some prospective owners away,
the pug’s
temperament and companionship that it provides will always
be a reason that new owners pick the pug over many other potential
breeds.
