There are many designer breeds and hybrid crosses of dogs. One of the cutest and unique crosses is that of the Chihuahua and Pug. The Chihuahua Pug is a great hybrid cross of two small toy lap dog breeds. Affectionately breeders and dog lovers have dubbed this cross of the Chihuahua and Pug the “Chug” or more professionally the “Pughuahua”.
When designing hybrids breeders do not know what they are going to get, it is not as simple as a fifty-fifty split between the Chihuahua and Pug breeds. Many times the breeds are not exactly a pure fifty percent cut of purebred on both sides. In any case the ultimate outcome is usually a highly desirable combination of the greatest traits of both breeds, as that is the ultimate goal of hybridization.
Smarties, Little Smarties
A common claim of the Chihuahua Pug mix is that they are extremely smart and that they are great with family. They have many claims that they enjoy activities with their human companions as if they are just one of the family and not really a dog at all. Some owners have claimed their Chihuahua Pug friends have watched television, played ball games with them and even had a favorite toy that they enjoy sleeping with every night. Their intelligence adds another level of enjoyment to the relationship that they can build with their owners and makes for an entertaining and eventful bonding experience as dog owners.
Size Doesn’t Matter
Most often the Chihuahua Pug breed tends to be larger than the Chihuahua, and weighs between 15 and 20 lbs. In some cases they keep the Pug coloring of tan and black face and features like flat wrinkly face but the snout is elongated slightly, adding to the unique look of the Chihuahua Pug hybrid. Some breeders have bred the mix with long haired Chihuahua’s and have added a lion type flare to a small Pug breed. The Chihuahua Pug has an often great mix of colors and the tails are not curly etc, however with these mixed breeds it is very hard to tell what the norm is.
Dollars And Cents
In many places the prices of the Chihuahua Pug puppies vary from $200 to as high as $700. There is much controversy in the animal community as to whether this type of hybridization is good for dogs or not. In many places there are a lot of dogs needing homes, yet designer and hybrid breeds like Chihuahua Pug are more popular for new dog owners. The advancement of dog breeding would not be where it is without mixing of breeds, and some breeds we have today were bred for purposes so arcane and brutal that their purpose as a canine breed no longer exists. Many breeders see hybridization as a way of making breeds that are a better fit for our apartment living, city dwelling, large family and children bearing lifestyles. There are advantages to designing the perfect dog to fit our needs and that is apparent in a result like the Chihuahua Pug.
In some instances we have to think how far are we willing to take our practice of mixing breeds and making designer breeds for large profit when there are many pure breeds and mixed breeds needing homes now.
Local shelters are always full and many dogs are constantly in need of good homes. So many people are willing to pay so much more for designer breeds and hybrid breeds that more and more breeders are making attempts at creating the next hot puppy for sale. Large sums of money are being charged for breeds that haven’t been around for more than a few years as a hybrid, and we are continually pushing the limits on the next popular breed.
Dogs for adoption from shelters and rescue centers vary in age and cost only a small fraction of what a hybrid like the Chihuahua Pug would cost to buy. Before stepping forward and making the absolute decision that a Chihuahua Pug or a Chug is what you want for your family, look into your local area shelter and rescue centre and see what animals may be waiting for you. You may find an animal that you never considered, and it would mean the world to many people in the process.
