Can Someone Explain to Me What a Collapsed Trochia Is?

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Hi. I just found out from my mom that my puppy who is a chinese pug has a collapsed trochia. :( he needs a stint or else he might not make it :( i am very worried for him he is only 11 months old. Can someone explain to me what a collapsed trochia is? i never heard of it but i heard it has to do with the throat :(
Dmath; ya my mom says we can give him pills for the rest of his life but that sounds bad we rather pay for surgery for a stint

Collapsed TRACHEA………..
Tracheal Collapse is a narrowing of the trachea (windpipe) due to softening of the cartilage rings in the trachea in Pug breed and other toy and miniature dog breeds. Symptoms include a cough, especially after exercise, noisy breathing and gagging. Treatment consists of conservative therapy or, in severe cases, surgery and is a serious health problem..

Any Pug Owners, Breeders or Knowledgeable Dog Breed People?

Sunday, March 27th, 2011

I have been doing my research on Pugs as I find some of them very cute!
I would like more insight though.
1.) What is the difference between Pugs and Chinese Pugs?
-I have been trying to find the answer on the internet. I know some internet sites that say they don’t exist but others say they do.
2.) What are they prone to?
-I know they are prone to eye problems, elongated soft palate, obesity, PDE, PRA, Luxating Patella, Stenotic Nares, Collapsing Trachea, PK, and Entropion. Anything else?
3.) How much do Pugs cost from a GREAT breeder (roughly)?
-I’ve seen them from $100-$1,000. Roughly what would a really good breeder charge?
4.)What’s an easy way to house break them?
-I know that their size and being stubborn they can be hard to house train.
5.) Is it true Pug have a reverse sneeze?
-I heard this from somewhere, not to sure where but I am curious if this is true.
6.) Could a Pug be a farm dog?
-I know they are not active and mainly sleep, and are not good in hot weather, but that does not bother me. I live in Wyoming so it gets really cold out here, even in summer.

Are there any good breeders in Wyoming or Ohio?
I just recently moved to Wyoming, and still adjusting.
I have family in Ohio that I visit a lot, so a breeder in Ohio could even work!

I am not looking to get a Pug right away, I just want to get some more knowledge on them, before I even make the decision.

Oh, I also want to know how healthy a Pug could be when coming from a pet store. I know they come from puppy mills, and a lot of them are not healthy at all.
I was at the mall tonight and since I was close I stopped into the pet store. I fell in love with a playful Pug. I noticed his breathing was labored, he seemed to look like he was going to sneeze, but didn’t. I also thought at one point he was coughing, and he had clear drainage coming from his nose. What could possibly be wrong with him? Part of my wanted to buy him then and there, even though I would be supporting puppy mills, and take him to a vet and get him healthy. Good or bad idea?

Thanks dog ssection!

i would say get books and start reading. talk to vets and groomers. talk to trainers. talk to people at pet stores and dog parks.
would have to google breeders and go look at them and see.
1. don’t think any. pugs are from china.
2. would have to check out breed standards. google it usually tell what defects are in breed.
3. depends on blood line, quality,
4. same as any other dog, you take out
5. most small dogs will do this, not sure why except bad breeding is what i think
6. any dog can be if raised in house with you

sounds like a sick puppy
maybe $3000 later you might get him over what he has. but then he will have other medical problems, more than likely.
bad idea

How Do I Convince My Parents That I Deserve the Puppy?

Saturday, December 11th, 2010

I’ve been aiming for a Chinese pekingese pug.
i had one but it got stolen. and here nobody really cares.

see, i love puppies and dogs, they simply make me happy.
and well lately, well the past couple of years have been hell for me for a lot of reasons.. for example :
1. having cancer.
2. losing 3 VERY close friends because of illnesses.
3. losing my favorite aunt because of Multiple Sclerosis.
4. losing my best friend because she simply turned into a bitch !! :S
5. my life turning upside down after cancer.
6. still have side effects from the Chemo Therapy, and not doctors nor my parents seem to believe me when for example i tell them i’m having a very hard time breathing.
7. used to be a straight A student, now i’m lucky if i get to the B.
8. being compared to my sister, the golden child, 24\7. [she studies in MIT so... you can imagine what i'm being compared to]

but, whenever i play with a puppy, or pet one, or just simply see one, all that goes away.
and my parent’s don’t believe me. they won’t let me get one.

they think i won’t take good care of it. so i tried to prove them wrong on that point. i read all sorts of books and searched all sorts of things on how to take care of puppies, specially a pekingese pug.
but they still say that i have to get an A so they’d get me one.

but they don’t believe that this is really the best i an do.
they don’t believe me when i say i’m a completely different person now (after cancer).

so what should i do. HELP!!
i’ve tried talking to them.
i told them everything the second person that answered said to do.
i already did that..
they didn’t believe me, they thought i was just making up crap to convince them to get me one.

btw, i’m 16, a sophomore. [female]

but i like the idea of telling them to try me, and if it doesn’t work they’ll take him away from me.. i think i’ll talk to them about that :D

I’m sorry that your life hasn’t been the greatest, but in all honesty nothing you say there convinces me that you DESERVE a dog. Did you work hard to earn the money for a dog? Did you do PROPER research? Can you physically and mentally care for a dog on top of doing better with your studies?

Being sick sucks, losing people sucks, but that is no reason to say "i DESERVE" this or that. The word "Deserve" points to the whole "i earned the money, i did the work, so i should be able to buy what i want" idea.

Mom and dad are paying for you and your sister. That means all of your medical bills and needs, all of her needs, the house, the utility bills… the economy sucks, which doesn’t help, and THEY work hard to pay it all off. They may not have the extra dough to spend on a dog.

And no offense but the way you spell out your illness makes ME think that you won’t be able to fully care for a dog right now. Do you have the ability to go on daily walks? Participate in daily training? Clean up the poop and pee? What about school? Shouldn’t THAT be more of a priority?

Sorry, but no matter what the circumstances it’s STILL mom and dad’s decision.

PS – A pekignese/pug is not a breed, it is a mutt.

PPS – Dogs are NOT toys that you can return if they don’t work out or if you don’t do your part. THAT is a totally IRRESPONSIBLE way of looking at things – i wouldn’t even THINK of bringing it up to your parents… it WILL solidify their beliefs that you ARE NOT READY for a dog.

Sheesh.

How Much Can I Sell My Pug Chihuaha Puppies For?

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

my chinese pug has puppies with a chihuaha and i want to sell them for money to get momma fixed but i need a good price

Whatever you want to sell them for. Bare in mind that they are mutts at the end of the day.

Ps I bet they look really cute!

- No they should not be free!God knows where your pups might end up, someone will see that a pup is *free* will just take it! If you charge a reasonable amount, you have more of a chance the pup will go to a good home. A mutt or not your pups still deserve to go to the right home!

Which Breed Should I Get?

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Yes this is a repost, but I added a lot more info in this one, so hopefully I will get some better answers.

So I made a list of a bunch of small breeds and put YES, NO, or MAYBE next to all of their names. I really don’t know which to pick though! It would really help if you could put 5-10 of the best dogs in your opinion out of the ones I listed. I really need help picking! I am looking for a small dog that I can compete with in conformation. Most are pretty good. It would really help! Oh, and you can add dogs to your list even if they say NO or MAYBE next to them. PERSONAL EXPERIENCE IS A PLUS! I am sorry if I am asking a lot!

I have a German Shepherd / Boxer mix, so I want the breed to generally get along with other dogs. I will also be getting the dog as a puppy.

My current dog is great with other dogs, and not territorial at all.

Yes, the Parson Russel Terrier IS the same breed as the Jack Russel Terrier. They changed the name to Parson Russel Terrier in 2003.

I have 2 cats, 1 dog, and 2 fish. I am looking for a dog who is friendly with people and dogs (I will be getting it from puppy hood so I know MOST breeds will be fine if properly socialized then). I am looking for a dog that is, well not exactly "low maintenance", but I don’t want a very NEEDY dog that whines constantly and needs constant attention. I want a dog that won’t try to kill my cats, but it is okay if they were bred for hunting, as long as it can be trained out of them. This is what a based most of what I said about each breed on.

Grooming is a minor concern, I am willing to take the dog to the groomers once a month, and I can devote 10-30 minutes grooming the dog every day.
I posted it again because LIKE I SAID, when I posted it I didn’t have the additional details.
I don’t want a "puggle" because there is no such thing as a "puggle" and I am not going to support some idiotic BYB! I want a REAL breed of dog that I can show in CONFORMATION. Something you have probably never heard of because you think dogs like "puggles" are real breeds!
Lovemydogs,
this is the SECOND time I have posted this question, and I added a lot more personal info on this question…
My dad is the one who helped me make the list that I put up, and he said that I can get one around April.
I know that showing a dog is more than just showing up. People can be so rude here. This question is not about how to show dogs, it is just me asking for peoples personal experience with the breeds I listed.
I meant the first part of your answer was rude. I know not to get my heart set on a specific breed, that is why I asked for TEN, that way one of them is bound to end up near me. I am not going to pick a breed just because the breeder or mentor is closer.
Well I must have been mistaken about the Parson Russel Terrier, but I looked on a dog breed website and it said that they had changed it in 2003. I don’t mean low maintenance for grooming, I am willing to do that, I mean low maintenance as in, not very needy.
My dad had a JRT when he was little, and it never tried to eat his cat. That’s why I thought that you could train them not to eat cats.

No the parson is not the same breed as the Jack. The jack and parson split off from one another and are separate breeds now. Go look up the standards for each. The jack is much shorter than the parson is, and the heads are slightly different. AKC recognizes the Parson and the Russell (basically those who wanted to show their shorties gave their breed the name Russell terrier). Jacks are strictly working dogs.

You can NOT train out hunting instincts, get that out of your head now. Like I said go look up Youtube vids of Basenji yodel, see if you can live with that.

Mini bulls will chase your cats most definitely. In fact the majority if not all the terriers you listed will chase and try to kill your cats. Finding majors is next to impossible. There are better lines in the UK than there are here. The best line here is probably Bonsai and Eggstream.

The Finnish Spitz is not a small breed, they are medium sized, they are larger than anything on that list. Very barky and it’s an annoying bark. Very uncommon for the most part, so finding one is going to be a hassle. Finding majors (show) will be next to impossible.

Show grooming should be done by you, unless you can find a local groomer that knows proper show grooming.

Needy dogs? Don’t get a toy breed, as that is what they are bred for, companionship.

Pulis are not low maintenance they need specific grooming or you can ruin that coat. Need a job to do most of the time.

I can tell you now that finding a show quality frenchie is going to be difficult and you will need to jump through many hoops. Frenchie breeders can be very stingy. Great dogs, but stubborn like all bully breeds are, bark quite a lot.

Poodles are high maintenance grooming, and you really need to be precise with it. Hours of grooming goes into them. They can be yappy, like any toy not trained properly.

Tibetan terriers get their hair parted which is something you would need to learn. It is not hard once you learn. Great dogs, funny attitudes, lots of hair. I know the top breeder in the UK, so was around them while I was over there.

Toy fox terriers have the terrier attitude and spunk and energy.

With terriers even the small terriers you need to learn proper sparring, for most of them. Like the welsh and the Scottish terrier, and PRT and a few others.

Pyrenean shepherds are going to be harder to find as they are fairly new to the AKC. Alot of these breeds are going to need lots of careful thinking and lots of searching for breeders as they are not common.

Ideas on Breeds for Us?

Saturday, September 4th, 2010

It won’t be for a few more years yet but we want to add another four-legged member to the family when my baby gets to around 3-6 years old, depending on the money situation and if we can handle it. We already have a Chinese Crested hairless (Low energy, currently 8 months), a Border Collie (Low energy, 7 years) and a JRT x Pug x Beagle x Border Terrier (Medium energy, 1.3 years).
We have a fairly big house, large garden and the dogs will be getting a walk in the morning (2 when I take the child to playschool, and all will get a run in between when the child isn’t home and me going to work at about 10am. When I get back from work (4/5ish, sometimes earlier) the other two will get a walk to the childminder’s or my mum/mother in law’s (whoever has the child) to pick her up, unless it’s too far, then I’ll drive. They’ll then get a run when my boyfriend’s home (Either at 11am then he’s home all day, 3pm then he’s home all day, or he works 6pm til 10pm. Sometimes he works doubles, but I doubt he will when our child is born) on the field near our house. We’re very energetic and they’ll get taken out extra if I’m taking my little girl for a stroll, popping down the shop, etc.. They go most places with us. They’re also left out in the garden with free run of the lounge and conservatory when we’re out.
I want another Crested, but my fiance refuses haha. He wants a Husky or Border Collie puppy, but they’re so high energy and I’ve heard of Huskys killing babies because they thought they were squeaky toys? (Correct me if this is the media again) Also please don’t suggest the American Pit Bull Terrier as we’re in the UK and sadly they’re banned. If the American Staffordshire is legal in the UK we’d certainly look into them.
We also own birds and rats so a dog with a fairly low prey drive would be excellent. My fiance also doesn’t want a small dog, I’m not bothered on size so long as they’re fairly easy to train and aren’t extremely nippy as pups. More unusual breeds would be appreciated – I’ve never seen the attraction in popular breeds such as Labs and Westies.
So, to sum it up:
Med – Low energy
Low-Med shedding
Unusual
Get along with kids or aren’t known for having child aggression
Not small
Fairly easy to train
Low prey drive
Not a yappy/barky breed

thankyou! All suggestions will be looked into :)
After taking the dog breed selector on animal planet, are these breeds suitable?
Curly coated retriever
Saluki
Welsh springer spaniel
Pharoah Hound
Scottish Deerhound
Vizsla
Brittany
Bernese Mountain Dog
Greyhound
Akita
Whippet
Dalmatian
Irish Wolfhound
Rhodesian Ridgeback
Dobermann
Rottweiler
Great Dane
Australian Shepherd
Boxer
Weimeraner

Please don’t say rescue – I’m not comfy with rescuing dogs and not being able to meet the parents.
Yes they are, but it’s breeds we feel would fit in with us, despite our lifestyle. The Dobermann is higher energy but will get enough exercise. The Whippet is calmer but would still get walked a fair bit. etc :)
Not a Labradoodle – I had one as a kid and it nearly took my face off. I’m still nervous of Labs and Std. Poodles
sorry! i do know the pros of rescue but I was bit by a foster dog of ours and its put me off the idea

Saluki!

Aggression in New Puppy and Older Dog?

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

Alright, detail time.

I just got a new puppy, pug/poodle mix, 5 months old. She’s a little bigger than my older dog.

Older dog is a 2 year old Chinese crested powder puff. Her name is London.

I’m aware that I didn’t introduce them properly, but I wasn’t really given a chance to do so. My mom just kinda rushed in and pushed the new puppy in the house with the old one. London, the older dog, is scared by the new puppy i think. She runs behind the couch to her "spot" every time the dog is around. She tucks her tail and slinks away. The puppy is trying to be friendly. She once tried to lick London’s muzzle, but london wanted none of that and snapped at the puppy.

Earlier London was laying next to the puppy without growling at her too much, but i let them both free in the house and then this happened.

the puppy started to walk into the kitchen, (realizing back, it was near her food bowl, but london was on the other side of the kitchen away from it) and london growled again. the puppy barked back at her, which made london growl again and this time lunge toward the puppy, who backed away. the puppy went back up to london with her tail wagging, and london tried to bite her this time- which made the puppy growl back. I pulled the puppy away at this time and told them both NO, and clipped the puppy on the leash and pulled her away from London, who continued to stay in the kitchen near my mom.

My mom is already on the verge of getting rid of the new puppy because she thinks she’s ugly, so this isn’t helping at all. Is it because the new puppy is physically bigger? My mom also wants to get a 13 week old yorkie, but I’m afraid that London won’t accept the yorkie either. What to do?
AJ: i tried giving them both treats- London first, then the puppy. I don’t have a spray bottle but I’m going to try that next. But yeah, treats didn’t do anything except make the dogs want more treats.

Try giving the dogs treats when theyre nice and spray water on them when they are bad.

Housebreaking My Older Dog?

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

I have a 10 month old chinese pug and we have had her since she was 7 weeks old, she refuses to go potty outside. She has learned to go to another room so we won’t see her do it and we find the puddle or pile later. We take her outside several times a day and she may pee out there but she’ll come right inside and wait till we’re not looking and go do the other inside. We have tried crating her, puppy pads, we have even done the "not scolding" her but we’re so fed up. Anyone have any other ideas??

Put the dog on a schedule, easy as. Take her out every 30 minutes and leave her out there for a good long time. Also, take her for long walks and whenever she goes potty on the walk, praise her. If you see she’s had an accident inside, take her outside immediately. Take her out before and after every feeding time also. If you follow this through, you should have a potty trained dog in no time at all. It’s a lot of work, but do the work unless you want her to have accidents inside.

Suggestions on Breed….?

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

….or if we should even get another dog at all.
When our son was growing up, we had two Chinese pugs. Our son has left home and the pugs got old and have passed on. We miss them, but it has been almost two years now and we’re thinking about getting a dog. We’re older and I’m retired, so I don’t really want a puppy. We also don’t have a fenced back yard and we don’t believe in shock collars. My husband and I are at odds somewhat. I miss having a loyal companion when he is at work. I don’t miss having to clean up the shedded dog hair all the time. My husband is very active in his off-hours and wants a dog he may be able to take along on his bicycle rides. I’m not that active. What would you suggest under these circumstances? I could get a lap dog for me, my husband could get a more active dog for him, but I’m the one who is going to be home with the dog most of the time. I am the more dominant personality in the household, and my husband has a tendency to spoil dogs and let them get away with just about anything.
Should we even get a dog? Any answers appreciated.

I’m not averse to a larger dog.
Both my husband and I are allergic to cats.

You should get one dog that will be a weekend warrior with your husband and a couch-potato with you during the week. Greyhounds are fantastic for this- and they’re a dime a dozen in rescue. Ex-racers are generally between two and six years of age.

I agree with the poster above who suggests you get an older dog. It doesn’t sound like you have patience for a puppy (which is entirely understandable- puppies aren’t for everybody).

As far as the no fence situation goes- invisible fencing isn’t so much a shock collar as it is a barrier. Most dogs only need to get shocked once or twice and won’t test the fence line after that, so it might be worth looking into. An invisible fence can save your dog’s life (what if Fido bolts out the front door when you have a guest?)- if you aren’t willing to put up a hard fence, you should at least consider training your dog on an invisible one.
