Do Pugs and Chinese Shar-Peis Usually Get Along With Cats?

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

I have 2 cats (11 year old female & 9 year old male) and I’m getting a 1 1/2 year old Chinese Shar-Pei/Pug mix in a week. I’m wondering if either of those breeds usually have problems getting along with cats. I know that if a majority of a breed does get along with cats does not always mean all of them will and vice versa, but I’m just curious as to what might happen. If you have either one of these breeds and also own cats, I’d like to hear your opinion. Thanks.
The dog has been around a cat before and I was told she seems very curious with it, but that it doesn’t last very long and she loses interest in it soon after. I can only hope she does the same with mine.

My female cat has been around dogs when she was a lot younger (years and years ago). She was great with my aunt’s 3 Yorkshire Terriers and sort of OK (kind of frightened) with my uncle’s Golden Retriver mix. After a while she seemed to get used to him.

My male cat has only seen one dog and this was recently. He was sitting on my windowsill (1st floor) and the superintendent’s dog came walking in the backyard and my cat ran through my house with his eyes bugging out. He’s obviously going to be the biggest challenge when it comes to introducing them.

I have 4 pugs and 2 cats- the pugs are a little curious about the cats but don’t chase them or rush at them, they more kind of watch them, and the cats make their snooty cat faces and generally stay away from the pugs. We sometimes get a cat watching the pugs from the sidelines with great disdain. Your greatest concern with breeds like pugs is that the cats don’t scratch their protruding eyes- if they ‘get it into it’ and a cat swats at a pug there’s a greater chance of eye injuries due to how their eyes are set. Pugs have about NO prey drive, so genereally cats and pugs become friends of sorts or at least learn to tolerate eachother. Couldn’t tell you about Shar pei’s, but I don’t think that breed has a high prey drive either.

What Would Happen if I Gave My Chinese Pug(dog) a Peanut Butter Cookie?

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

i have a dog and her name is Sally.
she likes my peanut butter cookies…
is it ok for her to have one?

I would not give them to your dog, as they are made with people in mind. There are dog enabled (lol) cookies on the market, that have ingredients specifically designed for the canine body. Meaning not going to be bad for their health. I know one or two does not seem like a bad thing, however your dog will wan them all the time and it may become a habit. Dogs see us eating something and of course they are going to want some as well. Pugs are predisposed to health problems anyways so it may not be wise to give her your cookies. :o 3

Getting Papers on a Chinese Pug?

Tuesday, October 11th, 2011

I now have a male chinese pug and I am told that he is pure breed but during a seperation the papers went missing. I would like to breed him and Im sure that I would need his papers to do so and charge for it. Can anyone help?? Thank you.

If you are the owner of record, call the AKC and get a copy of the papers. How have you been showing him without his AKC number?? And getting his OFA certifications done? Without all that you should not even be considering breeding- only backyard breeders do that. FWIW- it’s just "pug" not
"chinese pug".

my friends two pugs shed non-stop, 24/7, 365 days a year … they are fed a raw diet and even with that, the shedding is copious … it is something pugs are notorious for … i have a dog that sheds twice a year and i rarely see her fur laying about … but when i take care of the pugs, within five days my apartment and furniture is coated in pug fur … all you can do is brush and vacuum …

What Are the Health Issues in Dalmatians?

Sunday, August 22nd, 2010

i was thinking about adopting one but want to know the heath risks. also are the good with toy dogs?(chinese pugs?) thanks in advance.

Deafness is a significant issue in the breed, although there’s really no excuse for it as all dogs in the breed should be BAER tested. Only poorly bred Dalmatians suffer from deafness.

Hip dysplasia is another concern in the breed.

Kidney problems are the other big issue.

Allergies, eye problems, seizures, hypothyroidism–there’s a long list. Here’s the list from their national breed club: http://www.thedca.org/studygp.html

The biggest problem people have with them as pets is that they are extremely high energy dogs. Are you prepared to exercise the dog a few hours a day, hard? If not, you may not enjoy living with a Dalmatian. ;) This dog was bred to run all day long. If you don’t give him sufficient exercise, he’ll be a handful in the house.

You’d probably like to read the Dalmatian FAQ from the national breed club, too. http://www.thedca.org/freq_ask.html

ETA: You may or may not be able to recognize deafness without a BAER test. If the dog is bilaterally deaf (both ears) that is pretty obvious, yes. But if the dog is unilaterally deaf (one ear only) it’s less obvious. Unilaterally deaf dogs make perfectly fine pets, although they shouldn’t be bred.
