Your pet is probably eating bad dog food Actually, calling it “bad dog food” is an understatement. If you’re feeding your dog store-purchased food, you’re filling its bowl with one of the most ghastly, stomach-turning collections of disgusting and deadly filth you could ever imagine. Let’s take a look at what’s really in that allegedly safe dog food you find on store shelves.

Byproducts. That doesn’t sound that bad, does it? A little “animal byproduct” in your dog’s food doesn’t seem that creepy until you realize what that actually means. That “meal and bone” and those “byproducts” are horrific beyond imagination.

After the factory strips off those drumsticks and breasts from a turkey and wraps it up for sale in your local supermarket, they make use of the carcass. That collection of dead skin, feet, eyes and beaks gets shipped off for “treatment”. So do the dying (and already dead) cattle that couldn’t make the cut for human consumption. Chicken parts, too. Oh, and plenty of that roadkill you drive by on the highway gets tossed into plastic bags and sent to the dog food people. Pets? What happens to those strays who’ve been put to sleep? They become “byproducts” too, teeth and all.

The corpses are shredded and dumped into a vat where they’re cooked until the fat is separated. The dog food companies skim off the putrid fat and everything that remains is suddenly “meal and bone”, appropriate for use in dog food Cat claws, euthanized pet dogs, roadkill, chicken beaks and cattle with mystery ailments are all ground up to feed your pet.

That’s disgusting enough on its own, but it gets even worse when you realize that “quality control” in the dog food business isn’t all that great. The dead cat’s flea collar makes it to the grinder. The body bag that held the maggot-riddled corpse of unlucky road kill might make it into the mix, too. That’s right, all of that “bone and meal” is paired with ground plastic.

A little plastic can’t be good for your dog, but it’s not like it’s going to kill the animal after one bite, right? It’s not like we’re talking about a highly toxic poison, are we? Actually, we are. Those euthanized strays who died after taking a shot of poision are in that mix and that poison remains in there, too. Boiling ground corpses in a vat at 250 degrees doesn’t destroy the toxins. We’re just scratching the surface of bad dog food too. Dog food makers use crazy fillers made up of fake proteins that don’t do anything for your pet–they just make the label seem a little more respectable. There’s also the uncomfortable fact that they use creepy additives that have been banned from human food. Can you guess why those bad dog food additives aren’t allowed in the human food supply? Sadly enough, it’s because their known to encourage disease and even to cause cancer.

That’ what’s in your dog’s bowl. Disease-riddled corpses, animal waste, plastic, poison and destructive additives. To make matters worse, you can’t even trust the label on the bag. Labeling requirements are loose and a dog food company can claim that their peddling a natural product even when they aren’t. The company on the label isn’t deemed responsible for all of the nasty stuff that makes it into the “raw ingredients” it buys.

If you’re buying dog food from a grocery or pet store, you are poisoning your beloved pet. There’s no way around it. The garbage posing as dog food is despicable and anyone who really cares about the welfare of animals should be absolutely steadfast in their refusal to purchase the stuff.

Some researchers contend that countless dogs die outright from nasty, bad dog food and that every dog who consumes this sick garbage loses time off its lifespan with every bit.

You didn’t mean to do it, but you’ve been killing your pet.

Many of the dog food recalls that we have keeps us on guard because we are concerned for the welfare of our dogs and other pets. In the United States the Federal Department of Agriculture heads up other agencies which oversee our pet foods.

It is this agency that regulates and approves processing of animal feed to keep health standards as requested by American consumers. American pet owners do not like bad dog food.

We, pet owners, can also take responsibility for healthy foods:

  • Read labels – check ingredients, expiration date, and company name and address
  • Select packages and canned containers not damaged
  • Purchase healthy raw or freezer meat
  • Check for spoilage before serving food
  • Cleanliness in food preparation
  • Clean food and water dishes
  • Proper storage of left overs

September 9, 2007 the Federal Department of Agriculture advised caution to chicken jerky products arriving from China. Tests were done to investigate what was causing dogs to be sick, nothing was found. There may be other causes, also unknown. However, there were consumer reports stating their dogs were getting sick.

These symptoms included:

  • Decrease in appetite
  • Increased thirst
  • Increased urination
  • Diarrhea; occasionally with blood
  • Vomiting
  • Decrease in activity

The advice given by the agency was to see a veterinarian if symptoms became worse or continued for twenty four hours as there could be an indication of kidney failure or other tissue damage.

Salmonella found in pet food can cause infections in both dogs and cats. People need to avoid cross-contamination to human food. We have all had salmonella reports in human food and we know sanitation awareness is essential.

To avoid salmonella infection:

  • Purchase foods that are securely wrapped
  • Wash your hands before and after food preparation
  • Wash pet bowl, utensils and scoop after each use
  • Plastic wrap any spoiled or old food before placing in garbage container
  • Refrigerate opened canned meat
  • Freeze fresh meat until needed
  • Store dry food in a cool, dry storage area
  • Place original dry food container into a plastic container with lid is advised
  • Keep pets away from food preparation and storage areas
  • Keep pets away from garbage and trash cans

We have been fortunate in America not to experience mad cow disease. But did you know in April 2009 the Federal Department of Agriculture ruled that none of these diseased animals were to be used for animal feed?

It is said that only half of the steer is used for human meat and the other half is used in animal feed. In America we are very trusting of our pet manufacturers to do right by our animals and we forget or we are not aware that parts of slaughtered animals are used in dog food.

While the FDA is doing its regulatory job, we at home should be doing the same to prevent bad dog food. It is because of the recalls that many people have taken a look at how they can prepare food for their pets and avoid these problems. Choosing what to feed your dog can seem a little overwhelming and it sometimes might come down to cooking his or her food yourself. At the very least, getting some serious education about the good and bad dog food brands, and what ingredients your dog’s food should and should not contain.

Most of us know that our dog’s main food ingredient should be fresh meat. But, since going hunting for our dog’s dinner is not practical, we have to rely on the super market or pet food manufacturers to produce high quality dog food that we can trust, and that our dogs will happily eat long into their ripe old age.

There are some basic guidelines about what to look for on the pet food labels, to find the best foods for your pooch. The first rule is that the first ingredient in the dog’s food should be meat or meat meal. Not just any meat, but meat specified by its name. Accepting dog food brands that do not specify what kind of meat they used for their dog food is letting them get away with a very bad practice of using the worst parts of animals, which do not contain any nutrients. “Meat and bone meal” are not food. The same goes for the ‘by-products.’

Some people are afraid of the term ‘lamb meal’ or ‘chicken meal.’ The term ‘meal’ simply means that the fresh meat has been dried and ground into a meal, but its original content is still meat, as long as the origin of the meal has been mentioned – lamb, beef, chicken, salmon etc.

The source of animal fat is also important. Avoid food brands that do not specify the origin of fat. Meat fat or vegetable oil is not good enough. Chicken fat, flax seed oil, or sunflower oil is fine.

Avoid food brands that list grains as the first item on the list of ingredients. Dogs are not vegetarians. Many bad foods contain bigger percentage of corn, wheat gluten or soy bean meal than meat of meat meals. Canine food brands that contain peanut hulls, soybean hulls, rice hulls are stealing your money.
These ingredients should not be used even as fillers, as they contain no nutrients.

In both canned and dry food, there are some preservatives that are dangerous to dogs. Some of them are: ethoxyquin, which has been banned in Europe, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) and a whole range of artificial colors and flavors. Menadione, often listed as Vitamin K3 or dimethyl primidonol sulfate, has been banned by the FDA as highly toxic. In fact, the only permitted flavor should contain specific source, such as ‘meat broth.’

Sweeteners also have no place in decent dog food brands. Dogs like sweet foods, but they are as bad for them as they are for us, maybe even worse. If the dog food brand contains molasses, corn syrup, sugar, sorbitol, fructose, glucose, propylene glycol or similar, leave it on the shelf.

Let’s talk about what is wrong with processed dog food and why dog food, in general is bad. After you read this you may never even want to look at a can or bad of dog food again when feeding your canine family member.

Processed food is not as fresh as food that is prepared at home and eaten shortly after cooking. Any food product that goes into a can or bag to be sold off of the shelf in a store must be preserved. The wholesomeness of those products should be called into question. If there is no expiration date on the label this is huge sign of bad dog food.

If it is chemically preserved, you have to wonder about how safe those chemicals are. That is why it is much better to cook at home and make fresh food for your dog.

Homemade meals are the opposite of bad dog food and can be prepared ahead of time and then frozen for the following week.

Preservatives can build up in a dog’s body or a human’s body for that matter and over time it will build up and pollute the digestive system. When this happens, it can interfere with the normal functions of organs such as the liver and the kidneys. This buildup can happen faster in smaller dogs than larger dogs and it most certainly happens faster in canines than it does in humans.

Chemicals such as Ethoxyquin, BHA and BHT are common preservatives and independent research has shown that all are suspected to be carcinogens. Other possible dangers of a dog ingesting these are liver damage, fetal abnormalities and dysfunction with the thyroid.

When you make the meals yourself, you never have to worry about bad dog food. You can eliminate harmful ingredients and not have to worry about them. When reading the labels on brand name containers, you will find that it is not always easy to identify the ingredients that you will see. For example, what exactly is a meat by-product? And what is a chicken by-product? Would you eat this?

Pet food companies are not legally obligated to list all of the ingredient that go into the bad dog food and in many cases the ones that they show are listed in names that an ordinary person would not understand.
The pet food industry is not regulated by the government in the same what as the FDA regulates food for humans. They have regulate themselves, which is quite scary and does not give us much hope.

They only do a very crude analysis of the dog food. You will not that there is breakdown of the percentages for protein, fiber, fat and so on, but it is not listed in descending order from greatest to least. So, another way to look at this is that you will never know if the protein is coming from meat or something else. And you will not know if the calcium is coming from bone meal or eggshells.

Fish may be good for people but if fed exclusively to dogs it might be a cause of seizures and lack of appetite due to the deficiency of thiamine. Alcoholic drinks, just like with people, might cause the dog to be intoxicated and if taken in large amounts, may induce coma. There are foods that are unfit for dogs but there are also human foods that are deemed alright for them such as lean meat, some fresh fruits like apple or banana and some vegetables such as carrots. A visit to a vet is recommended though to have a better understanding of foods that are bad for dogs.

What is the healthiest dog food? Homemade may be the best choice of all, as long as you choose wholesome ingredients.

The idea that “people foods” are bad for dogs is based on the fact that most people do not eat right. They eat unhealthy, processed, prepared and packaged foods that contain too much salt, too much fat and too many calories, but not enough nutrients.

Just think about it. If it is bad for your dogs, it must be bad for you, too.

You can use small amounts of liver in a homemade dog food recipe, but you should only do so occasionally. Liver contains large amounts of vitamin A, which is toxic to both dogs and humans. Of course, humans can eat more without experiencing toxicity, just because their bodies are larger.

Cheese and milk can make tasty treats, but will cause stomach problems in some dogs. Lactose intolerance is another problem shared by both humans and their four-legged friends.

Which ingredients should be included in a homemade dog food recipe? Meat is one. Most dogs can eat all kinds of meat: poultry, fish, beef, lamb, etc. Dogs that are allergic to other kinds of meats can still eat lamb.

Rice is a good ingredient. Whenever our dogs are having stomach problems like diarrhea, the vet recommends chicken and plain rice. Barley is another good grain. Corn and wheat are not so good.

Mashed vegetables or fruits (other than grapes) can safely be added to increase nutritional value. The healthiest dog food is one that completely meets your dog’s nutritional requirements. It’s nice if he likes the way it tastes, too.
