Pug Dog

The Pug is a stocky but short dog with the males measuring 12 to 15 inches in height and weighing between 14 and 20 pounds, and the female bitch measuring 8 to 12 inches in height with a weight of 13 to 18 pounds. They have a round head which is disproportionately large for their body size with a square shaped muzzle that is blunt and quite short. Their ears can be either button shaped or rose shaped, and are small and thin. The tail curls over their back and is most commonly a double curl, with a short coat that is fine and soft. There can be a variety of colours such as silver black fawn and apricot. Whilst these dogs are small they are surprisingly muscular and strong.

History. The Pug is a very old breed of dog and thought to have originated prior to 400BC. Although there are great discussions, concerning the exact origins it is generally agreed upon, that they originated in Asia. The dogs used to often be kept in monasteries, and have been the favourites of various Royalty. Pugs were first introduced to Europe in the late 18th century by the merchants and crews of the Dutch East India trading company. In the 19th century, they arrived in the United States and were recognized as a breed there in 1885.

Temperament. The Pugs are not yappy dogs but they do make excellent watchdogs, drawing their owners’ attention to anything they detect that is unusual. They are strong of will, but generally amiable and it is rare for them to be aggressive. They are well suited as a family pet and get on well with children; they are also strong enough and sturdy enough to tolerate play with smaller children, which because of their size is not a problem as they are not big enough to knock small children over normally. They are not normally particularly excitable dogs, yet they are rarely boring. They also integrate well with other pets in the household. Because they are muscular and active they tend to like more exercise than other dogs of similar size. It is very important to assert yourself as the master of your pet, otherwise the dog may feel that they are in control, which can cause them to be destructive, a dog that feels they are in control of a household is rarely as happy as the dog who realises their correct place in the hierarchy.

Health issues. Pugs can catch a cold quite easily and do not tolerate particularly hot or cold weather. Due to their short muzzle, they have a greater tendency towards breathing problems. It is also prone to ailments of the skin and, a condition known as pug dog encephalitis, which is a brain based infection. It is common for the females when giving birth to require a Caesarean section, due in no small part to the size of baby’s head. They can also suffer some eye conditions, and it is important not to over feed a pug as they will eat more than they require which will lead to obesity.

Grooming. Because of their predisposition to skin problems it is advisable to only brush them when necessary; this is of course also true for bathing. After a Bath, you have to dry the dog as thoroughly as possible. The exception to this rule are the creases around the dogs face, these must be cleaned regularly and quite frequently. As a breed they shed quite heavily but this is only seasonal, and more grooming may be required at that time.

Living conditions. The Pug is well suited to living in an apartment but does require a reasonable amount of exercise. When out walking you need the dog to walk beside or behind you as they tend to see the person leading as the person in command. These are a determined breed, and you need to assert yourself as their master.

The Pug – Little Dog in Charge

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

Small and spunky, the pug dates back over 2000 years. Their story is rich in history and they have been favorite subjects for many painters. They weigh between 14-18 pounds and are 10 inches to 14 inches in height. They are known as Mops in Germany and Carlin in France.

The Pug comes in many colors including black, apricot-fawn or silver. They are AKC recognized. Their short, smooth, glossy, fine coat is very easy to groom. They only need an occasional brushing and only need bathed with necessary. Be sure to clean the creases in their face regularly. Pugs have been known to love attention and they typically enjoy the attention that a good brushing gives them. Their curly tail, flat muzzle and prominent eyes are three of their best known appearance traits.

Born to be a companion dog, the Pug loves attention and being with their family. They need a family that will not leave them alone for long periods of time on a regular basis and do best in homes where someone is around most of the time. They are a lap dog and enjoy relaxing with their family, but they also have an energetic side and need plenty of play time. Be sure that you don’t over exert them. They are happy-go-lucky little dogs. They do well with other pets and dogs, but early socialization is recommended. They have an *I’m in charge* attitude with their family and other pets. Due to this reason and their small size, they work best with older, well behaved children. They will let you know if they hear an unfamiliar sound or if someone is at the door making them excellent watchdogs.

Dating back to 700 BC, the Pug originated in China. There is a debate among many groups as to which dogs were used to develop the pug. Pugs were mainly used as companion dogs for royalty and nobility. They were introduced to Europe through trade ships traveling between China and Europe. It is said that a Pug saved the life of William, Prince of Orange by alerting him that the Spaniards were approaching. Napoleon’s wife used a Pug to send a secret message to him when she was in prison. Winston Churchill’s wife called him by the nickname Pug. Many of you might be familiar with the famous pug Frank that appeared in the movies Men in Black and Men in Black II.

With their loveable, happy nature and need for affection and companionship, the Pug makes an excellent dog for families looking for a lap dog with a take charge attitude. They enjoy traveling or staying at home as they are happy whenever and wherever they are with their family. Their whimsical looks and nature make them hard to resist.

Pug History – a Lot of Dog in a Small Space

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Pug history is quite interesting and colorful. Pugs are known to be loyal, affectionate, and playful house pets that are known for their smallness in size and ease in taking care of. The Pug breed goes back to around 400 BC in China where they were bred to be companions of royalty. Even the W wrinkle that is formed on a pug’s forehead was said to be known as the Chinese character for the word “Prince.”

In Europe, the pug was also known for its relations with royalty. The most famous story about its loyalty was in the 16th century with William III. It is said that the pug of William III, named, Pompey woke his master with his barking as a warning during the night before a surprise attack by the Spaniards. Because of this, Sir William was able to escape being captured.

Indeed, Pug history shows that this breed has often been a favorite of many historical figures including Josephine, wife of Napoleon. Josephine had a Pug named Fortune whom she used to smuggle secret messages to Napoleon under the dogs collar when she was imprisoned in at Les Carmes.

Though there is still much debate over how the pug was named that way, several records show that also in the 16th century, the word “pug” meant “endearment.” In later years, the same word came to mean “bargeman” or “courtesan.” In the later centuries, it was known to describe or define the breed of dog that it is now.

In the 18th century, the breed of pug became acceptable for registration, made possible by the American Kennel Club. Since then, the pug has been known to be a great excellent show dog as well. It certainly lives up to its motto “Multum in Parvo” which literally means “a lot of dog in a small space.”

As you can see, Pug history is full of glamor and intrigue but, as any Pug owner will tell you, today’s pugs are just as wonderful as pets and companions as they were centuries ago.

Understanding Pug Dog Breed

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

Pugs are cute, fun and entertaining to watch. These little fur balls love to clown around for their human companions. With a flat wrinkly black face and beautiful fawn or black coats people fall in love with them immediately. This is a breed that although their expression looks stern actually are very sensitive especially to the tone of the human voice.

Pugs have been called by many names such as Carlin, Mops, Mini Mastiff and Dutch Bulldog, however the breed was started many years ago in China. The size, shape and even coloring of the pug has changed over time until today where the standard coats accepted by the American Kennel Club are black or fawn. Some breeders have begun crossing the pug with Chihuahuas and even Beagles creating designer breeds such as the mini pug and the puggle.

Temperament
Pugs are a perfect breed if you have a lot of time and attention to give them. They live to please and are actually known as the clown of the dog world. Your pug will enjoy your company and as mentioned above are sensitive to the sound and tone of the human voice. This means that training time will be better without harsh words or punishment.

Be prepared to have a constant companion when you have a pug puppy or puglet in your home. They like to have your full attention and will often follow your every move when you are walking around the house. This animal can be quite stubborn at times as well, so be prepared to work harder with them on sit and stay!

Training
If the pug has a character flaw it is their stubborn streak. This dog is not a golden retriever by any means and it will take patience and consistency to assert your authority with this particular breed. The best way to overcome a lot of this is to begin training at a very young age, you can use puppy training at home to nip these behaviors in the bud.

A well trained dog is a joy to have around but a belligerent one, not so much! Whether you have had your pug for years or are just considering the idea you will want to consider training your pug at home. Soft calm tones are mandatory as is a firm tone; your pug must be constantly reminded who is the boss!

Potty Training
Being in firm control of your pug will come in quite handy when it is time to start potty training. This is yet another area where their stubbornness leads to issues. The standard dog will be potty trained within a month or month and a half expect to spend at least double that amount of time training your pug puppy!

Tricks

When you spend time training your pug at home you increase the bond between you, so not only will you have a well behaved dog but a loyal one as well. Besides training for obedience you can also teach your pug fun tricks. They naturally clown around but with a little training you can have them dancing or even jumping through hoops!

Exercise
You may think the only reasons to train your pug are for obedience or fun, but did you know that teaching your dog to roll over and jump is great exercise? Small dog breeds such as the pug and beagle are prone to becoming overweight and as an owner you should commit to daily exercise whether it be training, walking or a combination of the two. Pug training can easily be done from home saving you hundreds of dollars you would pay at professional trainers.

When you have the proper information training your pug at home is fun and easy. Besides there is nothing your pug puppy would rather do than spend time with you whether it is to romp in the grass or learning to sit, they love to be with you.

The Pug Is Well Described by the Phrase “a Big Dog in a Little Dog Body”

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

The Pug is Well Described by the Phrase

The Pug is well described by the phrase “a big dog in a little dog body.” They are known for their even-tempers, playful personalities, and their outgoing, loving dispositions. They readily adapt to all situations. They are a family favorite as the Pug’s reason for living is to please and be near their family members, particularly children. The Pug is a sturdy breed, needing only minimal exercise, which makes them ideally suited for apartment living.

As with any short-faced dog, owners must be cautious to not let the pug over exercise, as they are susceptible to heat stroke. Because they are short-faced, the pug will often snore while sleeping. This is one of the most common reason pugs are surrendered and end up in rescues.

Because Pugs are very food oriented, training with food as a reward is usually successful. The owner must be careful though, as pugs tend to become overweight. A premium dog food should always be fed to keep the pug healthy.

Did you know that owning a dog can extend your lifespan? Studies have shown that pet owners have less stress, less cholesterol and lower blood pressure. Many dog’s are excellent protectors of there families and can act as a early warning system to intruders. Also if you walk your dog on a regular basis you will get good exercise as well.

To walk your dog you will need a few accessories like a dog leash. For identification purposes it is a good idea to have a dog collar for your dog with updated tags. You should also consider training your small dog. Training treats are available and can be very effective if your dog is food driven. Dog owners may also consider a formal dog training class.

At What Age Do Pug Dogs Start to Shed, Is the Furminator Good?

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

As far as age goes, it varies. You might luck out and get one that doesn’t shed too much. I love the FURminator BUT you can’t overuse it. When the dogs are shedding I only use it 3X a week. When they aren’t I use it 1-2x a week. In between you have to use a regular bristle brush or comb.

Do Pug Dogs Get Hungrier in the Winter?

Tuesday, December 7th, 2010

My pug is usually hungry but lately she has been worse than normal, I give her 2 cups of food a day one in the morning and one at night. She has been licking the bowl clean and in the afternoon is eating papers and anything else she can. I read dogs eat more in the winter but I do not know if that was true or not, how much should she be eating?

My pug likes to pack on winter fat (keeps them warmer, and with their coat I think they need it ^_^). I say no more that double her regular portion. after that it is way too excessive and you can have an obese puggy problem.

Do Pug Dogs Sleep in Kennels at Night? or Is That Just for Large Dogs?

Sunday, September 12th, 2010

I’m getting a pug dog and I’m worried about putting him in a kennel at night
I dont want him to be scared…
if it’s ok to do so, do I keep the kennel in my room?

Thank you!

All dog kennels or crates are for all kinds of dogs large or small. the reason you put them there is for 2 reasons, one for their safety so nothing happens to them while you sleep and the other reason is so they learn what a kennel is for.
You use a crate or kennel if you work and it is a safe place for the puppy while you are gone. this way the puppy cannot get into things and hurt himself or chew up furniture and trash and clothing.
And yes of course you can put it in your room as the puppy will be glad to be near you . Now during the day if you are home, he needs not to be in the crate or kennel as you will need to train him to go potty outside and he cannot learn if he is stuck in a kennel all day.
So yes put him with you and a soft blanket and a few toys to keep him happy while you both sleep.
Have alot of fun with the puppy.
