Why Do People Think Living Animals Make Good Presents?

It shocks me the amount of people that seem to buy living animals as presents for Xmas and birthdays…whats worse is that these often seem to be total surprise presents with the giftee having no idea. I know of someone that got given a LABRADOR PUPPY as an Xmas present…it wasn’t a parent to child gift either, just someone bought their adult friend a lab puppy, didn’t even bother to get food or anything for it so it had nothing to eat on Xmas day apart from turkey! I also seen a pedigree pug puppy for sale as an "unwanted present"! Who are these crazy people who think pets make a good xmas present? Its one thing if the person KNOWS about it and is fully prepared. quite another to just go out and buy an animal when you have no idea if the person in question even wants one! Ridiculous!

What are your thoughts on pets as presents?

I agree with you. Nobody should give an animal as a gift. A true animal person likes to choose their new pet. Sadly most of these gifts will be either rehomed or worse, homeless, by February as they were not wanted or suitable in the first place. These thoughtless people annoy me intensely .

Because I bet you’d look pretty sickened if someone bought you a dead cat.

they are stupid idiots. Thats all there is to it. It seems as if they go : "hmm.. well lets see.. should i get this person a giftcard or a dog?" theyre idiots. I got a puppy after i got surgery when i was 8 but that was cause one of my other dogs died.

In parts of Ontario, Canada, they will not adopt out any animals before these holidays, as they usually end up back at the Shelter on the first business day. Any other time, only the person who will be owning the animal, can adopt the pet. I think these rules are practical.

Depends on who the gift is for & whether they’re capable of looking after it though I agree it’s not a great idea to buy a pet on a whim.
I wanted a Border Collie pup ( I’d lost my other dog) and my then husband bought me one as a gift. I loved and treasured that animal and she had a very long and happy life with me.
The best idea IMO would be to vet ALL prospective would be animal owners and to stop irresponsible breeding on puppy farms

It all depends on the situation. For her birthday I bought one of my best friends a fish tank and a pretty betta fish. She never saw it coming and she dearly loves that little fish and talks to him every day!
However, I don’t think other animals make good surprises. At least a fish is completely contained and a very low maintenance pet. It breaks my heart when I see all the ferrets on CL now- the babies that were bought as presents and are being "rehomed" because they nip a little. They’re babies! Their supposed to nip! UGH.

my mom bought me a dog for my 18th, but that’s because i was fully prepared and had my heart set for years on one. she bought everything it needed, and got it’s shots. i knew about this, because she asked me what i wanted and took me to pick one.
i think under some circumstances, it’s fine, like mine, we were getting a dog, the only difference between my situation and buying a family dog is that the dog was mine.
but when people just buy them on impulse and no one is prepared, they can only expect it to go in the pet section of the local paper.
